Reports To: President & CEO
Direct Report: Sales & Services Specialist, Meetings and Conventions Market
Status: Full Time/Salary/Exempt

Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Evenings and weekend work is required periodically to support clients, events, community activities, and industry travel.  Statewide, regional, and national overnight travel is required throughout the year.  Schedule flexibility is available to compensate for supporting events and travel outside typical office hours and to support work-life balance.

Salary Range: $55,000-$60,000, dependent upon experience, with City of Greenville, NC benefits package equivalency, which will be discussed with the selected candidate.

Summary of Position:
The Sales and Services Manager, Meetings and Conventions Market is responsible for leading the recruitment, development, booking, and rebooking of meetings, conventions, conferences, and other group business for Greenville and Pitt County. Reporting directly to the President & CEO, this position serves as the organization’s primary sales leader for the meetings and conventions market and directly manages the Sales & Services Specialist, Meetings and Conventions Market.

This is a proactive, relationship-driven sales position responsible for developing new business, cultivating existing accounts, qualifying opportunities, responding to RFPs, conducting sales outreach, arranging and leading site tours, attending industry conferences and sales events, and converting qualified leads into definite business. The Sales and Services Manager maintains an active sales pipeline and works strategically to increase room nights, visitor spending, repeat business, and overall economic impact generated by the meetings and conventions market.

The position develops and maintains strong relationships with meeting planners, association executives, corporate and government clients, SMERF organizations, and other group decision-makers, while serving as a key liaison to local hospitality and community partners. These relationships include, but are not limited to, all Pitt County hotel and motel partners, East Carolina University, Pitt Community College, downtown merchants, meeting and event venues, restaurants, attractions, service providers, and other stakeholders that contribute to the destination experience.  

The Sales and Services Manager works closely with the Sales & Services Specialist to ensure a seamless transition from sales through servicing and post-event follow-up, with a focus on exceptional client experiences that generate repeat business.  The position also evaluates sponsorship and partnership opportunities associated with meetings and conventions, represents Visit Greenville, NC in professional and community organizations, and collaborates across the Visit Greenville, NC and Play Greenville, NC Sports team to advance organizational goals.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Meetings and Conventions Sales & Business Development

  • Lead sales efforts for meetings, conventions, conferences, association, corporate, government, SMERF, and other assigned group markets.
  • Proactively identify, research, qualify, solicit, and secure new business through direct sales, industry databases, referrals, conferences, previous clients, partner leads, competitor research, and other prospecting strategies.
  • Meet or exceed established sales activity, lead, booking, room-night, and economic-impact goals.
  • Manage the full sales cycle from prospecting through booking, including RFPs, proposals, presentations, follow-up, closing, retention, and rebooking.
  • Use Simpleview, Cvent, Mint+, and other tools to research opportunities, manage accounts and leads, document activity, maintain follow-up, and track results.
  • Qualify opportunities based on destination fit, availability, room-night potential, economic impact, seasonality, client needs, and overall value to Greenville-Pitt County.
  • Maintain knowledge of industry trends, planner needs, competing destinations, and market conditions to guide sales strategies.
Industry Sales, Travel & Professional Representation
  • Represent Visit Greenville, NC at statewide, regional, and national conferences, trade shows, marketplaces, sales missions, networking events, and client events identified through the annual Program of Work.
  • Develop appointments and sales goals in advance of industry events and complete timely lead follow-up and documentation following each event.
  • Conduct sales appointments, presentations, client entertainment, and networking activities, including activities outside normal business hours.
  • Participate in relevant industry associations, professional development opportunities, and local community organizations to build relationships, generate referrals, and strengthen Greenville-Pitt County’s position as a meetings destination.
Site Tours, Client Experience & Partner Relations
  • Arrange and lead customized site tours and familiarization visits for prospective and existing clients, coordinating with hotels, venues, East Carolina University, Pitt Community College, restaurants, attractions, downtown merchants, transportation providers, and other partners.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with Pitt County hotel and motel partners, meeting venues, educational institutions, hospitality businesses, community stakeholders, and other destination partners.
  • Maintain current knowledge of local hotel inventory, meeting space, venues, amenities, and other destination assets.
  • Conduct regular partner visits and participate in hotel/motel meetings, networking opportunities, destination presentations, and other relationship-building activities.
  • Participate in planning committees for secured groups as appropriate and work with the Sales & Services Specialist to ensure a seamless transition from sales through event servicing and rebooking.
Sponsorships & Strategic Opportunities
  • Evaluate sponsorship, hosting, partnership, and client-investment opportunities associated with prospective and secured meetings and conventions.
  • Consider room nights, economic impact, destination exposure, strategic value, repeat-business potential, budget availability, and organizational goals when evaluating opportunities.
  • Develop recommendations for the President & CEO regarding sponsorship and partnership investments and coordinate approved commitments with clients and partners.
Sales Tracking & Reporting
  • Maintain complete and accurate account, contact, lead, sales activity, booking, lost-business, and follow-up information in Simpleview and other applicable platforms.
  • Monitor and report sales activity, pipeline, bookings, room nights, lead conversion, rebooking, lost business, and other established performance measures.
  • Coordinate with hotel partners to obtain post-event pickup and performance information for reporting and future sales efforts.
  • Use sales data and market intelligence to recommend adjustments to prospecting, travel, tradeshow participation, marketing, and sales strategies.
Team Leadership & Organizational Collaboration
  • Directly supervise, coach, and develop the Sales & Services Specialist, Meetings and Conventions Market, including establishing priorities, expectations, feedback, and professional development goals.
  • Coordinate the Specialist’s involvement in sales research, client communication, site visits, group servicing, partner outreach, conferences, and post-event follow-up.
  • Participate in regular Sales Team Meetings, sales training, organizational Team Meetings, and other internal meetings as assigned.
  • Collaborate with the President & CEO on annual sales priorities, performance goals, travel plans, budgets, and the Meetings Marketing Strategy.
  • Work collaboratively across Visit Greenville, NC and Play Greenville, NC Sports and support community events, partner programs, tourism initiatives, inclusion efforts, and other organizational priorities.
  • Represent Visit Greenville, NC professionally with clients, partners, community organizations, industry associations, and the public.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the President & CEO.
Performance Expectations:
Specific annual performance goals will be established by the President & CEO and may be adjusted based on market conditions and organizational priorities. Measures may include, but are not limited to:
  • Qualified new leads and prospecting activity;
  • RFPs and proposals generated;
  • Definite meetings and conventions booked;
  • Hotel room nights and estimated economic impact generated;
  • Lead-to-booking conversion and lost-business analysis;
  • Repeat and rebooked business;
  • Client and partner relationship activity;
  • Site tours and client engagement;
  • Timeliness and accuracy of Simpleview and other sales-system records;
  • Industry event performance and documented follow-up; and
  • Effective supervision, development, and utilization of the Sales & Services Specialist.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Hospitality, Tourism, Business, Marketing, Communications, Event Management, or a related field preferred; relevant professional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in meetings and conventions sales, destination sales, hotel sales, hospitality, tourism, association sales, event sales, or a closely related field preferred.
  • Previous experience developing new business, managing a sales pipeline, responding to RFPs, conducting client presentations, and closing group business strongly preferred.
  • Previous supervisory, team-lead, coaching, or project-lead experience preferred.
  • Experience with a destination marketing organization, convention and visitors bureau, hotel, convention center, meeting venue, association, or related hospitality organization preferred. 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong sales instinct with the ability and willingness to prospect, initiate conversations, build trust, ask for business, negotiate appropriately, close opportunities, and maintain long-term client relationships.
  • Excellent written, verbal, presentation, networking, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong relationship-management skills and the ability to work effectively with clients, hoteliers, venue representatives, education partners, community stakeholders, vendors, colleagues, and leadership.
  • Ability to lead and develop a direct report while also working collaboratively as part of a small, hands-on team.
  • Strong organizational, project-management, and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple clients, deadlines, RFPs, travel commitments, and priorities simultaneously.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to accurate CRM documentation and timely follow-up.
  • Ability to analyze business opportunities and make sound recommendations based on destination fit, economic impact, strategic value, and available resources.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office. Experience with Simpleview, Cvent, Mint+, or comparable CRM, RFP, and sales-intelligence platforms preferred. 
  • Knowledge of Greenville-Pitt County hospitality assets and the North Carolina meetings market is preferred; ability and willingness to develop deep destination knowledge is required.
  • Professional judgment, initiative, discretion, adaptability, and the ability to work independently while keeping the President & CEO appropriately informed.

  • A majority of work tasks involve computer and phone work, client and partner meetings, presentations, collaborative team work, and community engagement.
  • Tasks may involve extended periods at a computer or workstation and extended periods standing and walking during conferences, site tours, and events.
  • Requires bending, squatting, sorting, kneeling, and reaching to ground level and overhead as required for event and office tasks.
  • Must be able to hold, lift, grasp, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb stairs while carrying materials as required for site tours and events.
  • Work involves local, statewide, regional, and national travel and occasional outdoor work at community or tourism events. 
Travel Requirements:
Must have a valid North Carolina driver’s license, current automobile insurance, and own or have access to an automobile when needed. Regular local travel throughout Greenville-Pitt County is required for partner visits, client meetings, site tours, and events. Statewide, regional, and national overnight travel is required throughout the year for industry conferences, trade shows, sales missions, professional development, and client engagement. Evening and weekend travel or work will periodically be required.
