General Statement of Job
Under limited supervision, this position provides high-level assistance to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Continuing Education (VPAA/CE) while also serving in a leadership role as the Assistant Vice President for Curriculum and Instruction (AVP for C&I). Responsibilities include but are not limited to planning and implementing special projects, activities, and/or duties as assigned, as well as monitoring activities and details of operations that assist with compliance regarding the College’s strategic mission, vision, goals, and objectives. This includes the responsibility for the development, implementation, and coordination plans in support of college-wide student retention and/or to improve current and new retention initiatives and student support services. 

 

The AVP for C&I leads, supervises, and monitors the following direct reports: Director of High School Programs, the Director of Curriculum Programs and Scheduling/Facilities Scheduling, the Director of Grants Management, the Senior Director of Developmental Education and Academic Support, the Director of Academic Technology and Professional Development, and the Administrative Assistant III for the VPAA/CE. Reports to the VPAA/CE. 

Essential Job Functions

Serve as a member of the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Continuing Education (VPAA/CE) Educational Leadership Team.

Responsible for providing supervision, leadership, and management for the following departments: Academic Technology and Professional Development, Curriculum Programs and Scheduling/Facilities Scheduling, Developmental Education, TASC, PCC Library, and Transitional Studies, Grants Management, and High School Programs. 

Responsible for the development, implementation, and coordination plans in support of college-wide student retention and/or to improve current and new retention initiatives and student support services. 

Work with the Director of Academic Technology and Professional Development to expand professional development opportunities for faculty and staff; ensure 100% of course syllabi are uploaded into Moodle (LMS) and the gradebook setup in Moodle matches the course syllabus; ensure Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Department of Education (ED) compliance with all Moodle courses. 

Oversee, monitor, and audit in coordination with the divisional deans and PCC staff the following areas: 

  • Curriculum scheduling 
  • Curriculum programming maintenance and integrity 
  • This includes changes, additions, and deletions in programs of study. 
  • Course and program development and implementation of new programs of study 
  • Program termination process
  • Curricular partnerships, including articulation agreements (memorandums of understanding-MOUs and memorandums of agreement-MOAs), and instructional service agreements (ISAs) 
  • Status of North Carolina Community College Performance Measures
  • SACS-COC compliance for curriculum programs
  • College General Catalog

 

Develop consistent academic processes to increase efficiency, effectiveness, and quality.

Monitor the status of equitable, student-focused programming and advocacy efforts.

Review and assesses current practices, processes, and policies to ensure alignment with institutional, system-wide, state, federal, and accreditation requirements. 

Chair the Curriculum Review and Academic Calendar Committees and oversee the maintenance and revision of the PCC Academic Calendar.

Co-Chair the Performance Measures Working Group. 

Work with the Director of Curriculum Programs and Scheduling/Facilities Scheduling on researching and implementing predictive analytics into our scheduling system and associated processes.

Maintain custodianship of Ellucian access for curriculum management and other areas pertinent to the position.

Coordinate the management of information for the Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) Unit.

Research, prepare, and present recommendations to the supervisor.

Assist with the coordination of the plans of the Curriculum and Instruction Unit with those of other College units.

Coordinate special projects whenever requested. 

Serves as the State Authorization (SA) and Professional Licensure and Certification (PLC) Compliance Officer. 

Streamline and enhance SA and PLC disclosure workflows to ensure PCC in compliant. 

Collaborate with various colleagues throughout the year to ensure PCC is compliant with State Authorization from a North Carolina (SARA-NC) and federal perspective (NC-SARA). 

Work with colleagues from various departments across campus to ensure PCC is compliant regarding the new Professional Licensure and Certification Federal Regulations 34 CFR 668.14(b)(32)(ii) & (iii). 

Work to ensure 100% compliance with state authorization and professional licensure and certification requirements for the state of North Carolina and the federal government with no instances of non-compliance identified in audits or reviews.

Monitor the status of High School Program recruitment and articulation with local high schools and senior educational institutions.

Work with the Director of High School Programs to increase previous and comparable  Career and College Promise (CCP) enrollment by offering and filling additional sections of Workforce Continuing Education (WCE) courses from each of recently approved CCP WCE pathways which include Pharmacy Technician (PHM), Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Nurse Aide (NAS), and Fire Protection (FIP) Levels1-3. 

Monitor the status of Developmental Education, Transitional Studies, and Academic Support which includes the PCC Library and the Tutorial and Academic Support Center (TASC). 

Monitor the status of faculty and staff professional development, Perkins funding, and all other grants. 

Monitor the status of Distance Learning and third-party vendor course offerings. 

Serve as liaison, representing the Curriculum and Instruction Unit on a variety of committees and task forces.

Receive, prepare, and/or process various internal and external correspondence, records, and reports for the VPAA/CE.

Analyze and monitor the development and administration of the Curriculum and Instruction Unit’s budget by tracking expenditures and trends.

Confer with and provide staff assistance and advice to senior level College staff.

Assist direct report staff by establishing schedules and assigning tasks, monitoring, and reviewing performance, ensuring that projects meet deadlines and are completed in a professional manner. 

Assist in resolving issues related to academic relationships between students and faculty.

Assist with the development and administration of Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) Unit goals. 

Conduct studies and develop reports based upon an analysis of data pertinent to the operation of the Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) Unit and the College.  

Refer to policy and procedure manuals, codes / laws / regulations, publications, and reference texts, etc.  

Demonstrate digital literacy; operates and utilizes various types of office equipment and supplies including computer, smartphone, tablet, copier, fax machine, and calculator.  

Interact and communicate with various internal and external individuals and groups such as students, deans, staff, high school partners, employers, various heads of agencies, etc.  

Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications or Standards

Master's degree in education or a related field with at least four (4) to six (6) years of higher education experience, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.  

Minimum Training and Experience

Physical Requirements:   Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated machines including telephone, computer, copier, calculator, etc.  Must be physically able to exert up to ten pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Position involves mostly sedentary work but may require walking or standing for brief periods of time.  

 

Data Conception:   Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.

Interpersonal Communication:   Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes the giving of assignments and instructions to assistants. Includes the receiving of information and instructions from upper management.  Evaluates staff performance, giving verbal feedback.

Language Ability:   Requires the ability to read a variety of documents, reports, and books such as catalogs, various manuals, etc.   Requires the ability to prepare documents and reports with the proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, etc.  Has the ability to speak with poise, voice control and confidence.

Intelligence:   Has the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; and to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form.  Is able to work with several abstract and concrete variables.  Has the ability to apply principles of rational systems such as counseling, personnel (placement), and human relations, etc., to solve practical problems and work with a variety of concrete variables.

Verbal Aptitude:   Requires the ability to record and deliver information and to follow verbal and written instructions.

Numerical Aptitude:   Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers; utilize decimals; figure percentages; and apply descriptive statistics.

Form/Spatial Aptitude:   Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.

Motor Coordination:   Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using automated office equipment.

Manual Dexterity:   Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, computer, calculator, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination and Visual Acuity:  Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color; requires the visual acuity to determine depth perception, peripheral vision, inspection for small parts; preparing and analyzing written or computer data, etc.

Interpersonal Temperament:   Has the ability to work with people beyond receiving instructions.  The worker needs to relate to people in situations involving more than receiving instructions.  Must be adaptable to performing under minimum stress when confronted with an emergency.

Physical Communication:   Requires the ability to talk and/or hear (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear.)
