Academic Support Staff - Reading and Math Specialist

Position Overview: The Reading and Math Specialist will be responsible for designing and implementing individualized lesson plans, progress monitoring, and collaborating with school officials, parents, and community partners to support the academic success of students. This role will involve assessing students' performance, creating tailored curriculum strategies, training staff and volunteers, and contributing to the ongoing partnership with Pitt County.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Lesson Planning & Curriculum Development:

? Create individualized lesson plans for each student, focusing on reading and math proficiency.

? Develop reading lesson plans using resources such as the Hill Center, University of Florida Literacy Center, and the North Carolina State University MOOCed training program.

? Design math lessons centered around fact games, STEAM activities, and iReady program supplements to address students' specific areas of difficulty.

? Collaborate with the academic committee to gather effective teaching resources.

2. Data Management & Student Assessment:

? Monitor student progress using spreadsheets to analyze academic performance.

? Conduct in-house assessments to evaluate students' reading levels using the Hill Assessment tool, assess math proficiency through various assessments, and track behavior through anecdotal records.

? Utilize data provided through the partnership with Pitt County Schools, including student grades, M-Class reading scores, iReady scores, behavior reports, and attendance records.

? Provide quarterly assessments to measure growth in areas such as reading fluency, comprehension, and math operations.

3. Program Implementation:

? Implement lesson plans by working directly with students both individually and in group settings.

? Pull students from regular programming for targeted intervention sessions, focusing on reading, math, and social-emotional learning.

? Coordinate with school officials to potentially observe classroom lessons, aligning in-house interventions with classroom strategies.

4. Collaboration & Communication:

? Maintain regular communication with parents, teachers, school officials, and community partners to ensure a consistent support network for student success.

? Develop strong relationships with Pitt County Schools' principals, teachers, and data managers.

? Engage with community partners, including the Boys and Girls Club, CareNet, and local academic committee members to support holistic student development.

5. Training & Support:

? Train volunteers, interns, and staff on implementing reading and math lesson plans.

? Work with the in-house counselor to integrate social-emotional learning (SEL) lessons using the CASEL framework to promote students' self-efficacy and social skills.

6. Program Measurement & Evaluation:

? Track and analyze student progress daily and quarterly through various academic, behavioral, and attendance metrics.

? Report on student progress to the Board, highlighting successes and areas for improvement.

? Assist in expanding the program to support additional students based on fundingavailability.

Qualifications:

? In-depth knowledge of lesson plan creation, curriculum development, and student progress assessment.

? Proficiency in using Google Office Suites for data management and analysis.

? Strong organizational and communication skills.

? Ability to collaborate with school officials, parents, and community partners to support student learning.

? Experience working with diverse student populations, particularly in reading and math remediation.

? Familiarity with educational assessments and interventions for students struggling in foundational academic skills.

Schedule:

? This is a part-time position (20 hours per week),Typical working hours may include:

? 1:00-3:00 PM: Lesson planning, curriculum design, staff training.

? 3:00-5:30 PM: Student assessments, individual/group lessons.

? 5:30-6:00 PM: Meetings with parents or guardians.

Community & Board Support:

? The position will work closely with academic committee members, community partners, and local schools.
