Job Summary:
The Lead Accountant is an integral part of the finance and grant team. The primary role of the lead accountant is to maintain the financial records for the organization. The lead accountant will prepare balance sheets, profit, and loss statements, and other financial reports for the leadership of the organization. Accountant duties and responsibilities also include analyzing trends, costs, revenues, financial commitments, obligations incurred to predict future revenues and expenses, and offers suggestions about resource utilization, tax strategies, and assumptions underlying budget forecasts. 
Reporting Relationship:
The Lead Accountant is a full-time position and reports to the Executive Director.
Salary: $50,000 per year 

Essential Functions:

  • Prepare asset, liability, and capital account entries by compiling and analyzing account information
  • Document financial transactions by entering account information
  • Recommend financial actions by analyzing accounting options
  • Summarize and report current financial status to Executive Director by collecting information; preparing balance sheet, profit and loss statement, and other reports
  • Substantiate financial transactions by auditing documents
  • Maintain accounting controls by preparing and recommending policies and procedures
  • Reconcile financial discrepancies by collecting and analyzing account information
  • Verify, allocate, post, and reconcile bank and other financial transactions
  • Produce error-free accounting reports and present their results
  • Analyze financial information and summarize financial status
  • Provide technical support and financial advice to management
  • Accounts payable and receivable
  • Review and recommend modifications to accounting systems and generally accepted accounting procedures
  • Participate in Finance Team meetings to ensure leadership has the most up to date financial information.
  • Provide input into organization’s goal setting process
  • Prepare financial statements and produce budget according to schedule
  • Prepare and submit tax statements and reports
  • Direct internal and external audits to ensure compliance
  • Support month-end and year-end close process
  • Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls
  • Communicate with Executive Director on work status and issues that arise
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by Executive Director
Qualifications: 
  • Thorough knowledge of basic accounting procedures and principles
  • Awareness of business trends
  • Experience with creating financial statements
  • Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process
  • Excellent accounting software user and administration skills
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Aptitude for numbers and quantitative skills
  • Bachelor's Degree or master’s degree in appropriate field of study or equivalent work experience
  • Intermediate understanding of accounting and reporting standards, gaining experience in researching as it relates to accounting issues
  • Proficiency in Excel, QuickBooks, and other MS applications
  • Strong written, oral, accounting and computer skills
