FOOD LION FEEDS CHARITABLE FOUNDATION HELPS SALVATION ARMY
Gift will help provide hunger relief for families in Pitt County
Greenville, N.C. (July 25, 2020)—The Salvation Army of Pitt County has received $3,000 from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation just in time to help feed local neighbors. The local Salvation Army Command will use the gift to provide food and hot meals for hungry individuals and families.
“Our friends at Food Lion have been supporters of The Salvation Army for many years,” said Major Ken Morris of the Pitt County Command. “This very generous gift will help us continue to meet the needs of our neighbors financially impacted by the COVID-19 crisis, particularly due to unemployment. We have seen a huge spike in hunger in the community since March.”
Major Morris said the Food Lion gift will go toward providing food boxes designed to feed a family for up to two weeks, as well as for breakfasts served at the Army’s command center for anyone in need of a hot meal.
Established in 2001, the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding the hungry in the communities it serves. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $12 million in grants.
Annually, The Salvation Army serves thousands of people in Pitt County through programs that include food and meals, emergency housing, clothing, disaster relief, rent and utilities assistance, youth after-school programs and Christmas gifts for needy children and seniors. The COVID-19 pandemic has posed major financial setbacks for North Carolina residents and The Salvation Army has received an influx of requests for assistance.
