2nd Emerald Loop Intersection Mural to be Installed at Cotanche St./Reade Circle
GREENVILLE, NC – The Pitt County Arts Council at Emerge announces the installation of an Intersection Mural at Cotanche Street and Reade Circle in Greenville, NC. This is the second Intersection Gateway Mural as part of the Emerald Loop Project, a multi-modal urban arts trail.
The Intersection Mural installation at the Cotanche Street and Reade Circle Intersection designed by Haddad/Drugan will begin on Sunday, May 22nd at 6:00am and will continue through Monday, May 23rd into the evening, with contingency dates of May 24th and May 25th. This intersection will be closed during this time, however detours will be set up, including access down Cotanche through the parking lot in front of Chico’s Mexican Restaurant, and local traffic down Reade Circle turning right onto Cotanche St.
This intersection mural is the second of several streetscape public art projects as part of the Emerald Loop. Three more designs are planned for intersections on 5th Street after the BUILD streetscape project with the City of Greenville is completed. The others will be designed next year to help define the “loop” that will be experienced by those riding the Emerald Express Trolley. The design was created by Haddad/Drugan, an artist team from Seattle, WA who created the Emerald Loop Vision Plan. This will activate the intersection and is the second of a repeating hexagonal design that represents the molecular shape of the emerald. The material that will be used is a product called DuraTherm®, a plastic material that will be heated and inlaid into the asphalt where the design has been embossed. This recessed hearty process and material will hopefully have a life span of 10 years.
The intersection at Cotanche Street and Reade Circle in Greenville, NC will be closed from Sunday, May 22 until Monday afternoon/evening of May 23, 2022, with weather and contingency dates of May 24-25, 2022, if needed. Detours will be set up for the project, and the Pitt County Arts Council and City appreciate the understanding of our community as we begin to embellish our Center City through the arts!
About the Emerald Loop Project
Greenville was designated a SmART City by the North Carolina Arts Council in 2018. The SmART Resource Team was formed including city, county, and community leaders from the public and private sector. The Emerald Loop was chosen to be the project that would transform Greenville’s Center City through the arts. In 2019, artist/design team Haddad/Drugan was chosen from nearly 50 national applicants to create the Emerald Loop Vision Plan. With nearly a year of community engagement, meetings, and research, this plan is one that is unique to Greenville, defining our identity, and will impact our economy in a much-needed way. The Emerald Loop is a conceptual necklace connecting Greenville’s existing and envisioned cultural gems. The “Loop” is a multimodal circuit encouraging pedestrian traffic within the inner loop, and vehicular traffic within the outer loop. The goal is to connect our artistic and cultural gems, while simultaneously bringing together our neighborhoods and community. One of the jewels of the Emerald Loop is the Emerald Express Trolley with artistic Trolley Stops, that will be partially funded by the National Endowment for the Arts $50,000 Our Town grant that was recently announced, with Greenville being one of only 60 cities chosen for this grant.
