Rally for Ally began in 2014 as a community support group for the family of Allyson Hart, a 17-year-old Greenville, NC, native who was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor called an ependymoma. While processing the shock of few available treatment options for Allyson, her parents, Michael and Kelly Hart, began to research the reason behind the little progress made in the treatment of pediatric cancer (only 4 new drugs specifically for childhood cancer have been developed since 1970). To their astonishment, they discovered that annual federal funding for pediatric cancer research was a mere 4% compared to 96% spent on adult cancer research. The 4% was then divided among all pediatric cancers. Brain cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute, is now the number one killer of children with cancer, surpassing leukemia.
In 2015, the Hart family established Rally for Ally as a NC nonprofit, whose mission is to raise money and awareness to fill the enormous disparity in cancer funding for our nation’s children. Rally for Ally is established as a charitable fund under the sponsorship of the Community Foundation of NC East, a 501 (c)(3) organization. All donations are 100% tax deductible.
